Day 73

Today was a holiday for some, but the workplace doesn’t celebrate such things. That’s just as well at present, since I’m not sure what a holiday means at the moment.

Though it was a work day, I had a hard time buckling down. Probably, if you looked in the window and saw my posture, you’d think I was beseeching the heavens for intercession. In fact, my eyes were raised to a much closer plane.

When I first brought home the Emergency Command and Control Vehicle, the entire interior was wood paneling, except the linoleum floor. During the winter I painted two of the walls, thinking that would make it brighter, which it did, but I regret it to some degree. If I’d left the walls to show their wandering lines of grain, with such an endless number of shapes in it, I wouldn’t get such a neck ache from staring up at the ceiling.

Given the amusements offered by a computer connected to the internet, you wouldn’t think a ceiling would be the distraction from which I have to keep calling myself back. Yet, that’s where my eyes go when I’m fighting boredom or tiredness. I’ve been working there for 73 days, and I still find something new every day. To say it vibrates with life is… literally true. I’ve made gains in my war against the ants but I haven’t vanquished them. Nonetheless it’s a good ceiling for finding imaginary faces. Animals, mostly, but funny-looking people, too. There’s a little man that sits right above my head. Or I think it’s a man since he’s wearing a beard, though on certain days the beard’s a hat, so it’s not too late for any potentiality. On the far side there’s a lady bee with one wing. Don’t ask me how I know she’s a lady. I wonder if she misses the Two O’Clock Wasp, or if she’s glad he’s gone. There are a few others, too. Under the circumstances, I think it’s no bad thing to have some friends to keep me company.
