Day 24

I notice that writers, over time, develop the tendency to ignore the city hall scandal and the restaurant fire, and write instead about the Shriners' Wives' Labor Day Picnic.

I want to learn that way of looking at the world, but it's a tall order in isolation. If I ignore the top three most exciting things that happened today, that means looking past--

  - A phone call wherein I and my coworker each thought the other was mistaken, but we were mistaken.
- A dog that barked several times.
- Ants, having been successfully evicted from our home (unconscionable during a pandemic, I know), congregating in exactly those places where ants ought to congregate.

Good writers would probably skip number four, too, but I've only got four things. The habitat mate made muffins, and it's not even her day to make muffins!

The other day I overheard... What do you call it when you overhear something, but you read it instead of heard it? Overread? Except I guess the thing I overread was as much for me as anyone, so, I'll start over... I read the other day on Twitter, though I didn't want to tell you I read it on Twitter, something that seems related to my direction today:

"My wife and I have this game we've been playing in quarantine. It's called 'Why Are You Doing It That Way' and there are no winners."

We have a creaky kitchen door that's been in need of a little oil as long as we've lived here. I noticed it, but never really noticed it. This week I've been pulling up on the knob whenever I go through, because, man, that thing is shrieking. An airplane, from the airport, flew over yesterday, and I went outside, like, 'What was that?'

There's an upside, though. Watching a bumblebee is an adrenaline thrill ride now. Those ants? I saw them fighting some kind of miniature ground wasp or something. I think the wasp was eating them one at a time, and they were trying to smother it. I left before I found out what happened. It felt way too R rated for me. Imagine if they announced the Dread Virus was over, and they held a carnival to celebrate. Could I even think about going on the rides? Even the Ferris Wheel? I don't know, man.
